What to Expect

The route follows the Northdale valley through open moorland, linking nine buildings that Goldsworthy has restored and transformed: Southfield House, Hanging Stone House, Sugget Spring, Job's Well, Hither House, Bogs House, Ebenezer, Northdale Head House, and Red House. A tenth, Heygate Thorns, is under construction.
Each building is different — different light, different material, different silence. In Hanging Stone House, an eleven-tonne sandstone block is suspended above you. You can crawl beneath it. The moor shapes what you feel inside.
The terrain is honest moorland: compacted paths that turn muddy in wet weather, uneven ground, some slippery sections on the descent. This walk rewards proper boots and an early start. Allow five to six hours — not because the miles demand it, but because rushing would miss the point entirely.
Important: you must book in advance and collect a key from the Ross Foundation to access the buildings. No facilities on route. Bring water, food, and a map. Dogs welcome on leads.
